Welcome to the Charles B. Morris Memorial Chapter, Vietnam Veterans of America, located in Galax, Virginia. Galax is an independent city located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is bounded to the northeast by Carroll County and to the southwest by Grayson County. Meetings are held the first Thursday each month with a meal being served at 6:00 pm followed by our business meeting at 7:00 pm. Group meetings are held every Thursday at 6:00 pm. Location: 115 West Grayson Street (Our own building).

On May 26, 2008 the Chapter was dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Major Charles Bedford Morris. Sergeant Morris was born 29 December 1931, in Carroll County, Va. He was a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War.

Sergeant Morris joined the Army from Roanoke, Virginia, and served during the Korean War before heading to Vietnam. By June 29, 1966 he was a Sergeant in Company A, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173d Airborne Brigade (Separate). During a firefight on that day in the Republic of Vietnam, Sergeant Morris continued to lead his squad, fight the enemy, and help the wounded despite being wounded himself four separate times. For his actions during the battle he was promoted to Staff Sergeant and, on December 14, 1967, awarded the Medal of Honor.

Sergeant Morris reached the highest enlisted rank, sergeant major, before retiring from the Army. He died August 22, 1996, at age 64 and is buried in Morris Cemetery, Fancy Gap, Virginia. (Read the official citation)
